Day 45 (Part 3- Day) Alton, IL → Dupo, IL

40 Miles Today, 1320 Miles Total!

The guys got a late start to the day, making for a bit of a night paddle to end their day. The weather was a bit cooler with a little wind to their backs and overcast.

They completed the last two Lock and Dam systems, today! This is also the part of the Mississippi River where the Missouri River joins!

It's great they don't have to wait on the barges anymore, however the large water makes for more barge traffic on the River. They were expecting to either portage or paddle through the Chain of Rocks, based on water level. But, while they were at Mel Price Lock and Dam, they were informed that there was a channel that bypasses the chain of rocks. Who knew?! So they took that route instead

After the last lock, they made it to the gateway to the west- Saint Louis, MO! Their late start made for a beautiful sunset paddle though the city. However, there was no where to camp, so they continued on- forcing a bit of a night paddle. The barge traffic caused the water to pound the canoe from every which way. On top of the darkness, it was definitely a rough way to end their day! Eventually, they found a sand beach to camp on for the night.
